Washington D.C.

Wednesday once I got off work it was a rat race at it’s finest! Immediately when I got home I had to finish packing for my weekend work trip to Washington D.C. where I was working at our expo booth for the Marine Corps Marathon Expo. Clothes here- clothes there, clothes were flying everywhere… I also had to pack for Kirra and gather a few of Tyler’s items as well.

Mac & Cheese was diner- because it was quick. We had our last night at gymnastics at 6:30pm, and the kids got to go in costume! So I dressed Kirra in her bee costume which still fits her, and probably will for a few more years. Good thing she REALLY likes the bee costume! Then we were off to gymnastics. They got to parade around, and show all of the “big girls” their costumes, which was adorable… then it was time to play. Kirra got to go on any circuit she wanted to, and it seems that her favorites are obviously the trampoline, but also really liked the rings, balance beam – when she’s NOT afraid of it, and this board that is suspended from the parallel bars that they crawl on hands and knees.

Gymnastics lasted until about 7:15 and then we were back to the house to pack up. Kirra was staying at Grandma Susie’s and Poppie Rich’s, and Tyler was going to Grandma & Grandpa’s. So, we threw everything into the car and were off by 8pm. I got over to Frank & Theo’s by 8:30pm, said a quick hello and goodbye, and got Kirra over to my parents. My flight left at 7:30 a.m. but wanted to get to the airport in plenty of time, so I had planned to get there at 5:30 a.m. that meant I had to wake up by 4:30 a.m.

Once I got to my parents house they gave me the itinerary of what they would be doing with Kirra throughout the weekend, and I had only brought a fall coat, and its definitely WELL on its way to being winter in Minnesota…. So I left Kirra with my parents and quickly went off to Target to get her a winter coat, and mittens.

Once I got back Kirra was in the BIG tubby… everyone likes the big tubby at my parents because it’s a two person Jacuzzi bathtub that is gynormous so all of the kid-o’s think that it’s a swimming pool! I made some tea for my mom and I and then we were all off to sleep.

Really… 4:30 a.m. came way too fast! I begrudgingly got out of the warm toasty bed of my youth and proceeded to get ready. My amazing dad offered to give me a ride to the airport so that I didn’t have to worry about leaving my car at the airport, or taking the train down so early in the morning.

We got to the airport, and had to check our expo bag as oversized, and over weight, which was really unfortunate since there is a $32 charge to check more than one bag… a $75 charge for being over 50 pounds, and a $175 charge for being over a combined total of 62 inches! So we practically could have just bought another plane ticket for the costs of that!

Once we got through security which was amazingly long lines, we only sat down for a few minutes before we began boarding our plane. I had hoped to see Pam there, but she arrived to the airports front gates/doors at the same time I was boarding the plane. My co-worker Colleen and I joked that while we were taxing on the runway that Pam could see us from the window since we could see thru the airport windows the Maui Waui restaurant. We were off on our non-stop flight!

Once we landed in D.C. we got down to baggage claim which luckily we found all 3 of our bags very quickly and were off to find a taxi. Some guy in a nice suit asked us in his European accent if we needed a taxi…. And we said yes… so he says “here this way” and grabs our luggage, and leads us to the elevator… (THE ELEVATOR??) we take this to the second floor where we get out and go into the parking lot… when he said, I’ll be right back, I need to get my car… so he backs out a black SUV with tinted windows… we had to ask the guy if he was a real taxi driver, and he was, but was a taxi for hire, which is a little different than your typical “yellow cab” variety. I took down his licence plate number just in case while he loaded our luggage in and typed a text message draft to be sent to co-workers in the case of an emergency. Collen I’m sure thought I was nuts, but I wasn’t taking any risks.

Euro taxi man with the SUV got us to our adorable hotel safe and sound, and turned out to be a really nice man. He even waited for us to check in and then brought us to the convention center to drop off our expo materials. I shouldn’t be so worrisome all the time, but I watch too much news, and too many crazy horror films… I just can’t help myself.

After Colleen and I got our expo booth set up it was time for some tourist sight seeing. We saw most of the National Mall. We took a bus down there, and headed for the Capitol, and then were off to the Holocaust Museum. It closed at 5pm so we definitely wanted to get there in time to see everything and not be rushed. It was an experience I will not soon forget. The museum covered things history books wont, and also gave background to how things got so out of control. The moment we got to the main exhibit I was choked up and couldn’t even talk to Colleen any longer. There was at one point a room you went into that had voices of survivors that told their stories. It haunted me, because these were the real stories, and the real voices that endured the horror that Nazi Germany forced them to endure. They had various rooms including either an actual train car, or replica that had a very old musty smell. The train car was very dark and only had one window. You imagined yourself in this car, and quite frankly I could not. They also had artifacts of actual shoes worn by victims of the gas chambers which also had the musty smell… looking at all the piles of the shoes in the room was breathtaking, because you realized that these shoes were probably only from 2% of the total shoes.

It was a great museum, but it had other things that like I said- didn’t show you in your text books that were downright horrifying, and straight out of a Quentin Tarantino film.

Two and half hours later we were back on the national mall, and we realized we weren’t going to make seeing everything we had planned if we stayed on foot. We were going to take a trolly bus but they all closed at either 4:30 or 5pm and it was just a bit after 5:00 p.m. at this point… so we hopped on a “Pedicab” which are people who are on bikes with a buggy on the back that tour you around. It was really neat. Our driver was a history major and definitely knew his facts about D.C. and the National Mall! We got to see the Washington Memorial, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, The FDR memorial the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Wall, the WW 2 Memorial, and the white house! There is definitely no way we would have been able to see what we had!

Once we got off a fairly expensive buggy ride we were off to dinner (at 9:00pm!) We ate at a tavern and I had a cup of Chilly, and had a hamburger. It was all very delicious! The next day we woke up early to work the expo. We were having a motivational speaker in our booth as well so I was excited to meet him.

The expo was HUGE, and well coordinated. Colleen and I took turns taking breaks for lunch, and even just to walk around to shake things up. Standing in one spot for 11 hours can get a bit tiring! The speaker/author – Mike was a hoot! He was an inspiration, as well as very humorous, so the three of us had a lot of fun at the expo.

Friday night we went out for Thai food, and I think if I would have ordered something I liked it would have been really good. I ordered the Green Coconut Curry dish, and I discovered I’m not too much of a fan of coconut milk, but you never know until you try right?

Last day at the expo was fun as well. It was quite a bit more populated with participants than the first day so it made the day just fly by! We each took turns watching Mike’s speech and it was amazing! I called my parents at one point, to see how Kirra was doing, and they said she was laying in bed crying for me L That was pretty sad…. Saturday night after the expo closed and we packed up our booth we went to an irish pub which was packed with Halloween goers. We had an amazing dinner, and a few drinks, and went home to grab some sleep before the start of the marathon!

Marathon morning we woke up really early and were out the door. The taxi cab could get us only so close to the start but we really didn’t have too far to walk. On the way we passed the Seabee Memorial which I didn’t even know there was one, so I snapped a quick photo of it. It was really neat to see.

Once there it was enormous! All of their volunteers were Marines or so it seemed, I think there were over 20,000 at the start which was significant! We watched as about 30 or so marines humped out early with packs on their back (as they were humping the whole 26.2 miles) and then about 100 or so wheelers started!

Finally the massive 20,000+ runners took off and it took nearly 30 minutes to clear the start line! After the start Colleen and I walked over to the National Cemetery to get some cool photos. We even saw JFK’s grave site.

It was finally time to return to home. Our flight was great ,and once I got to my parents I went upstairs to find Kirra sleeping in my old bed, so I crawled in with her and she was sooooo excited to see me!

Crash.Boom.Oh

Last night we had a very low pressure storm hit the midwest, and it hit Minnesota like a windstorm unlike any i’ve experienced in my nearly 30 years of life! Driving definitely required two hands, and I was very grateful for my hands free bluetooth enabled car!

All thru the night I could hear the wind howling like a wolf at the moon and at times I swore I thought my whole roof was going to just pop off. I even imagined where we would sleep if it did! Well.. about 6am or so I heard a very loud crash then boom… it was definitely in the house… Intruder? My dog was sleeping at the foot of my bed knocked out cold…. he didn’t even flinch… I thought what the heck dog!!! Aren’t you supposed to wake up and bark? I wrazzled him, and shook him, until he finally woke up, and all he did was yawn and stretch. What a nice guard dog you are!!!!

The boiler was out so the house was FREEZING cold…it was only at 60….so I went down the basement and checked the boiler, and sure enough it was tripped. So I was so cold, and still wondering what had made all the racket earlier, when I noticed a strange object on the floor near the stationary tub… it was the basement window! The wind was SO STRONG that it had popped out the window – frame and all!

Raining in Baltimore….

It literally IS raining in Minnesota right now, and this song just perfectly sums it all up today. It was a good day, but I am missing someone… “These train conversations are passing me by… I miss you… I guess that I should…. 3500 miles away… what would you change if you could?”

On – On!

On – On!

Its a term used by hash running to say that you’re on trail. So… today I dusted off my running shoes, and got “on-on”. I only went a mile and a half, but I was also pushing a stroller. It felt so great. I definitely need to stick with it. I figure if I stay low mileage then I will keep liking it. The problem normally is… I try to go too far and then I get injured!
Last night I went swimming at Life Time. It was GREAT to get back into the pool! I completely forgot how much I like swimming. The water was nice and warm too. So I plan to rotate – swim/run etc. I’ll probably end up running more than swimming, since I can just come home and run right away vs. drive to the gym… but once the winter/snow hits I might swim more often, although by then hopefully I’m XC Skiing!

Mixing it up

Well we’re still doing gymnastics but only have 2 more weeks which is bitter sweet. Its been like a roller coaster because we’ve had lows with Kirra not listening, and highs when she’s mastered new skills… Now that we’re doing the Tiny Twisters 1 I’ve realized we’re paying $130 to jump on the trampoline…. Because that is Kirra’s favorite part… Jason and I don’t feel that Kirra is ready to go back to the 2nd level so when this class is over I’m not going to sign her up for this right away again… We feel like at this time its just not the best fit for Kirra. She’s a bit more timid of a gal… and is scared of heights, and balance beams etc… Well I took a few pictures today… enjoy!
On the trampoline

Jumping really high!

Crawling in the blocks

On the uneven bars

Somersault

Beam Circut

Humpty Dumpty game

Slide into the blocks

I looked thru the ECFE catalog to see what (cheaper) activities we can do, and they have a Tiny Tot dance class starting up in November, and that’s only $25! So we’ll do that, and see how that goes… Its all on the floor, and Kirra likes to dance… so hopefully it’ll be a good fit for her!
I started to DVR a new show on TLC called Sister Wives and it makes me sick… yet I’ve watched 4 episodes back to back… what does that say about me? Haha… I really really don’t understand polygamist marriage. I’m glad I’m not in that culture though… In one scene one of the wives 5 daughters were playing barbies.. and they had 1 ken.. and 4 barbies.. and the kids named the barbies all the wives names, and the person playing ken took turns kissing that various barbies… It was kind of ____ – what are they teaching these kids? I was really jealous of their barbie house though… I need to make one!!!
Off to read! Adieu.

Kids Place Live!

So with my Rouge we got 3 months of Satellite radio for free…and there is a station on there for younger children with various silly songs, movie theme songs, and more. Well Kirra’s favorite song by far is “Move it Move it” from Madagascar. I’ve never seen it but may surprise Kirra with it for her birthday…. and the “Hamster Dance”, which we heard today. Kirra gets her fists pumping, and her jam on in the back seat like she’s at a disco! Too Cute!!!!

I Like to Move it!

Happy October Days…

What a great weekend we had! Friday night Jason celebrated his birthday and played poker and Kirra and I had a mommy and me shopping spree. Ok.. ok, it was more like a ME shopping spree, but it was great. I got lots of new shirts, and three new pairs of jeans, in my pre-pregnant size! (Can I get a Woot Woot).

Saturday Kirra and I woke up early and went to our MUMs 3 year old birthday party at a family farm down the road… it was so much fun. They got to pet animals, we went on a hayride, had cupcakes, and opened presents. Kirra got a ballerina barbie and she will not put it down! (Too cute!) There are photos on the home page.
We came home took naps and then went out to the Outback Steakhouse for Jason’s birthday dinner with my folks and his. We all had perfectly delicious steak, and then headed back to my folks for cocktails… (well they did… I was sober driver).
Today was another early day, Kirra and I went to the new campus at church and I volunteered,so we were there for a while. After that we headed over to Wisconsin to see Miah & Amillie’s new house. It is GORGEOUS! I told Jason we ought to move over to Wisconsin, because you get way more house and land for your buck!
I think I found a new love tonight! Tazo Chai Tea with milk (Chai Tea Latte) soooo good! It is the perfect evening snacker! I love practically all of the Tazo teas… I’m trying to keep off the pop and junk food, so tea is my new…thing at night. With the exception of Saturday I haven’t had any pop since Monday. Here is to another week with no pop!
Until next time I bid you adieu!

Mommy help her!!!!!

Miss “sass-a-frass” has come full circle, and although still in its early phases, I see great potential for a very lippy girl!

Lately its just been incessant whining, and I can’t stand whining. Its like nails on a chalkboard. My dogs a whiner too… I know…. i’m the common denominator right? No… the dog whines for no reason, and Kirra gets so emotional over the smallest things!
Tonight for example, it started out just fine. We came home, let Tyler out, and then put Dora on and had a snack. While watching Dora she wants to know where her baby is… so I said, my room, on my bed… so she walks in the room and was like, waaaa where’s my baby? I said, Its on my bed… she goes back in, and cries she’s not in your bed… and starts to whine… i want my baby….. so I go in my room and plain as day, baby is on my bed….. we go back to the couch where she gathers her “baby supplies”.
She started hyperventilating because she was so distraught about something with her baby. She swaddled her baby doll (which mind you somehow she actually swaddles her baby right, and could probably go head to head with any L&D nurse…I digress)
…and then all the sudden started bawling her eyes out and crying, “help her, help her”. It sounded like a mother who was desperate to get her baby some help… so I said what do you want me to do? And she just starts screaming…. maaaaaammmmaaaaaa, do something… Now she is just sobbing……So i un-swaddle the baby, and Kirra sobs, noooooo she’s going to get cold… so then I start laughing because now she’s just funny…. but then I realize she’s so upset…. she starts to hyperventilate….. so I put the blanket back on the baby, and she just flips out… and says noooooooooo……. now i’m getting irritated so I picked Kirra up and brought her to her room with the baby, and told her she can come out later if she wants…. I went back to the living room and was like, OMG, this is my life…
So I turned on Days of our Lives…. and hung out by myself with my cats… who are not emotionally crazy….
About 10 minutes later she came out and said she was sorry and that she wants to be a good girl. And that was about that…. the rest of the night was just fine.
…..And these are the days of my life….

Operation Tango November

Went to dinner last night with Jason and my co-workers… We went to a very tasty Greek restaurant, and we both enjoyed our dinners very very much. Jason and I decided that we’re going to start exploring little mom and pop shop eateries and expand our culinary horizons.
I took Kirra to gymnastics today. Kirra did ok, but didn’t really want to participate with the group, she wanted to do her own thing…She wouldn’t sit in the circle, or line up so that was frustrating on my end, while everyone else’s angelic children behaved perfectly. Then there is this one girl in Kirra’s class who practically IS Shannon Miller, and I think she is younger than Kirra.
I’m guessing she’s done the class before. I polled the other moms and it appears that Kirra is the only one in her class who has never done gymnastics before, and the other kids have been doing it since they were 16 months old. It kind of gave me a complex… but i must not fear, or get too worried that Kirra isn’t doing perfect “starfish” on trampoline, or seat drops. Its just sometimes hard not to compare when its screaming in your face.
Well I will get my revenge this weekend when Kirra wins her age group in the toddler trot. We’ve been practicing year ’round, and cross training too. She WILL be the next Kara Goucher! (if she wants to) but in all reality, she really IS a good runner, and loves to run.
I hosted our small group tonight and it was great to see everyone. I was frustrated at myself for not having the house picked up more, but when you burn the candle at both ends of the stick there isn’t much of a wick to light at the end… which amazingly was the topic in a way…
Lots of last minute preparations are going on at work right now with OPERATIONS beginning on Thursday. Every year my old co-worker [he has since retired] and I would ‘name’ the Race Weekend an operational name since we were both military veterans. We use the phonetic alphabet which common, just sounds cool! Gosh I miss him… I will need to come up with an operational name on my own this year… hmmmm……..
Well for now (after literally 15 minutes of brainstorming with myself) i’ve come up with Tango November… Operation Tango November.… will get underway come Thursday. You can try to figure out what it means… but I can only tell Julliet Alpha… And yes… you can call me a dork!
Tomorrow is great! I have nothing going on after work so I can just relax!
